Why is NCERT needed?

After Independence, there was a lot of discrepancy in the type of education imparted to children. There was also a scarcity of qualified teachers, or qualified teachers who were interested in teaching. To address both these issues, the Government of India set up the NCERT in 1959 with the objective of imparting quality education to the students in rural areas. To better this venture, NCERT came up with the first set of five basic classes – Hindi, English, mathematics, social science, and science. After 1959, NCERT was tasked with maintaining the standard of textbooks that were being prepared for schools. For over 60 years now, NCERT has been the responsibility of creating educational materials that are suitable for the students across the country.
